Support NTT Women Artisans for a Sustainable Ikat

This campaign is the next phase of our previous crowdfunding to support NTT Ikat artisans from which the donation had been distributed equally. This time, we aim in support of a bigger goal: eliminating chemical dyes through training projects for a sustainable Ikat.

Ikat, which means “to bind” in the Indonesian language, is an ancient traditional weaving technique which involves tying and dyeing threads on a board in a pattern. CCD-NL have been working with Ikat artisans from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province in Indonesia to preserve this ancient heritage while also campaigning for a green environment. However, since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, NTT Ikat artisans have been struggling to weave the fabric and to meet their daily needs. This situation is worsened by the dry season which makes it harder to find the resources to naturally dye the yarn. Therefore, we invite you to join with us to empower NTT Ikat artisans to be economically independent and to offer them opportunities and resources to maintain and to develop this endangered ancient tradition.

What are the problems?

NTT is one of the most remote and dry provinces in Indonesia. Additionally, the lack of employment results in a high poverty rate compared to other provinces. Agriculture and fish farming are the two main sources of income, yet those still do not meet the daily needs of each artisan’s family. Ikat, which is a heavily water dependent process, is made by NTT artisan women to help support their families. The water shortage often compromises the natural dyeing process and forces the artisans to turn to chemical dyes which require less water than natural dyes. As a result, Ikat artisan women who are skilled and determined to preserve their heritage are struggling to keep weaving due to the lack of water and weaving materials.

Solutions

Empowering Ikat artisans through infrastructure for economic independence and preservation of ancient heritage.

Step 1 : CCD-NL and Ikat artisan groups have developed community-based projects where we implemented strategies for economic empowerment for women and for the sustainability of Ikat production. In addition to bridging artisans with national and international Ikat customers through our e-commerce platform, we are strengthening Ikat artisans’ skills – especially the younger generation – of using natural dyes through Training of Trainers project. We also connect NTT Ikat artisans with European designers and together they collaborate to create beautiful and unique products made with sustainable Ikat.

Step 2 : Every €50 raised through this campaign will be donated to one Ikat artisan group. We are currently working with 3 artisans groups which are based in Alor, Belu, and Rote Ndao. We hope that you will be part of our effort to support the artisans through providing weaving materials, water, and to support our training programs to include strengthening natural dye’s skills, a nurturing tree nursery to ensure raw materials to produce the natural dyes, and ready-to-wear Ikat products.

Step 3 : Artisans continue to weave stunning Ikat fabrics by using sustainable and natural dyes while at the same time preserving the tradition, promoting Ikat at the national and international level, and most importantly, supporting themselves and their family without compromising the environment.

Beneficiaries

Ikat fabric is never made single-handedly. Supporting weavers means supporting the community.

Our target is to raise €1000 which we will distribute equally to each Ikat artisan group in Alor, Belu, and Rote Ndao. Not only will 29 artisans in total directly benefit from this campaign, but the long-term impact will be more significant for the entire community and the environment.

With every €50, we support artisans with materials to produce 2 Ikat fabrics (i.e., 3 bundles of yarn, 1 bundle raffia rope, clean water, and transportation costs) and financially support our training programs. We do not give one-time aid. We partner and we collaborate for the continuation of the natural and sustainable Ikat tradition.

How can you help?

Every donation matters and you are one step away from making a difference!

If you donate €20 or more, you will receive a personal, handwritten thank you card from one of our Ikat artisans in NTT.

Every donor will receive a report from us, informing about our action plan and the distribution of the donation.
