Support LGBTIQ+ & Artcreation at drop-in for homeless, Makom

A few months ago I attended a bookpresentation about "Hier ben ik thuis", an illustrated childrensbook with real stories from homeless people in Amsterdam. To mark the launch, author Floortje Vermeer interviewed Youssef, one of the homeless protagonists featured in the book. Through their conversation, we learned more about the crucial importance of drop-in centers like Makom. Every day, around a hundred homeless individuals drop by for a shower, clean clothes, a cup of coffee, and human connection. What touched me most that evening was Youssef’s response. When asked what mattered to him the most, he replied that he finally had a name again. The realization that losing your home also means losing your name had never occurred to me, yet it feels deeply recognizable. As a homeless person, you truly vanish into anonymity; we all know the feeling of handing over some change and quickly walking away. At Makom, they become someone again. In addition, Makom offers the Art suite, where they create both art and music. Creative expression is—and I speak from experience—the perfect way to forget everything, including your worries. Creating art brings peace of mind. At Makom, homeless individuals are provided with the space and support to do just that.

Finding a safe space and a buddy is even harder for LGBTIQ+ homeless people. Since the queer community is very close to my heart, it was good to hear that they have a separate shelter within De Regenboog Groep, as well as special LGBTIQ+ Thursdays at Makom. On these Thursdays, which are dedicated exclusively to homeless LGBTIQ+ individuals and women, they get all the help they need, while being truly seen and heard. The homeless guests are also actively involved as volunteers; for instance, Youssef works as a cook and serves as the Master of Ceremonies at the monthly karaoke night. This book launch was a true eye-opener for me. It confronted me even more with how incredibly lucky we are, and how desperately support is needed for this growing group of homeless people. That is exactly why I am launching this birthday fundraising campaign for De Regenboog Groep, focusing specifically on Makom. Currently, their shelter is undergoing sustainability renovations, and this coming August, their beloved art suite will officially reopen. Your gift will help to buy new artmaterials.  Furthermore, your donations will help expanding this specialized support for LGBTIQ+ people in the homeless community. Please consider supporting my campaign.
