Borehole: a new school for the deaf in Uganda

We are dreaming of a world in which all children, including deaf and hard of hearing children, can access education and go to school! Talking Hands and our partner organization in Uganda, New Hope, are working together towards constructing a new school for the deaf. Now, the goal is getting closer and closer: We bought a piece of land and the building plans are almost finished. Nevertheless, one important ingredient is missing: We cannot start without your financial support! Therefore, we have set up a crowdfunding action for our first project: the borehole. Not only will the borehole support the whole construction process, but also it provides an added value for the community living in proximity to the school. The costs of the borehole are approximately 6.500 euro, and this money covers the insurance of workers, mobilization of personnel, drilling, installation, and pump testing.

Every little bit of support helps us to achieve the goal of establishing a new school for deaf students in Uganda. If you want to even get more active, you can also create your own crowdfunding campaign and start an action yourself, whereby funds will go to Talking Hands and the borehole project. To do so, follow this link and click on ‘start een geefactie’ on the right side of the page: geef.nl/doel/talking-hands.

Talking Hands

Dear friends,

We have great news: The borehole has been constructed! The Nsiisi village community now has access to and uses clean and safe water. The borehole is also the first step toward the new school buildings for deaf children, the construction of which needs water. We want to express our thanks to you and our partners for making this possible!

Talking Hands started raising funds for the borehole in November 2022. Together with you, we were able to raise an amazing amount of € 4405! With our Ugandan partner organization New Hope for the, we applied to Wilde Ganzen Foundation for additional funds as a total of €6500 were needed for construction of the borehole. At the same time New Hope for the Deaf organized the first community meeting to discuss the project and gather input. After a long wait, finally this year, everything was ready for the construction of the borehole!

It was not an easy process, as the large drill truck got stuck on the way to the selected drilling site. Luckily, community members volunteered to help clear the way and assisted in making an access road. At the end, the construction and installation of the borehole were successfully completed, making the community very happy!

During a number of meetings, the village community elected a borehole committee responsible for monitoring and maintaining the borehole. Community members agreed to take on the maintenance of the borehole by paying a small monthly contribution managed by the committee. This commitment ensures the long-term viability of the project and helps cover repair costs.

The majority of the village community are subsistence farmers living in poverty. Before having access to the borehole, the community got their water for cooking and even drinking from a dirty pond, negatively affecting their health. Or they had to walk very far and pay for clean water. The borehole improves the health and livelihood of the community! Moreover, the borehole will be a water source for the future school for deaf children, and is even needed for the construction of the new school buildings. The borehole will also serve as a meeting point between villagers and deaf children and teachers, which will reduce stigmatization and promote integration of the deaf into society.

On behalf of the village community and partner organization New Hope for the Deaf, we want to thank you so much for your contribution and support towards the borehole! We are also grateful for the partnership and support from Wilde Ganzen Foundation for this project. Without all of you, this would not have been possible!

Thank you!
