We as the Tess Unlimited foundation help children born with cleft lip and palate in Guatemala. However, every now and then we come across something that is not related to cleft, but that we cannot close our eyes to. That’s how we got to know Sofia, this is her story:
Sofia (3 years old) and her family live in the province of San Marcos, in a little house next to a huge garbage dump. One day Sofia comes home with a bottle filled with a kind of liquid (something similar looking to water) that she found on the dump. Her mother is busy cooking on an open fire at the time. And then it goes wrong… Sofia throws the bottle into the fire and a huge explosion follows. Her mother is left with minor injuries to her body, but unfortunately Sofia doesn’t easily get away with it. The blast reaches her face and causes a serious burn. The bottom half of her face is burned and her lower lip is severely damaged.
In a panic, her parents take her to the nearby National Hospital. She is taken under observation for 2 weeks, but there is not enough knowledge available to treat her injuries. Her parents do not give up and knock on the door of a second hospital, but unfortunately without outcome. Due to the COVID-19 virus they are unable to provide regular care. With their last bit of hope, they inquire at a private hospital. However, even if it would be possible for them to offer the right treatment, the parents will not be able to afford it. The search is unsuccessful…. Until they come into contact with a social worker named Ingrid. She decides to help the parents and reaches out to our foundation, with which she has been working for a long time and always refers all cleft lip and palate patients in the region to.
Due to the damaged lower lip, Sofia has a lot of trouble eating. In the 5 months that followed, she lost as much as 4 kilos, which left her underweight. From the moment we heard her story, we felt the need to help. Since we work with several plastic surgeons, we decided to schedule her for one of our surgery weeks. However, COVID-19 came around and our surgeons ended up being unable to travel this way. Because her scar is still not properly treated, the skin starts to drop and the mouth opens more and more. We feel compelled to help and decided that this is not the time to give up!
And now the good news! We managed to find a clinic in the capital that wants to help Sofia for a considerable discount. Sofia will have to undergo a total of 4 surgeries in one month. In the first surgery, a skin graft will take place to repair her lip, and in the three that follow, her wounds will be cleaned and cared for. In this case, due to the risk of infection, it is not wise to travel back to the remote village where they live. The parents have therefore decided to travel to the capital (7 hours away), where they can luckily stay with their family for a month. Social worker Ingrid is collecting donations in her area to provide the family with money for gasoline for the trip and food during their stay with the family. And we as Tess Unlimited have decided to cover the medical costs, including the operations and medicines. If that is not teamwork, then we don’t know what is!
The medical costs are 35,000 quetzales (= €4,000/$4,500) and we hope to collect (part of) this amount as soon as possible with your help, so that Sofia can start her road to recovery coming week!

Help Sofia aan een levensveranderende operatie!
Wij als stichting Tess Unlimited helpen kinderen geboren met schisis in Guatemala. Echter komt er zo nu en dan iets op ons pad wat niet gerelateerd is aan schisis, maar waar we onze ogen niet voor kunnen sluiten. Zo maakten we kennis met Sofia, dit is haar verhaal: Sofia (3 jaar) en haar familie wonen in de provincie San Marcos, in een armoedig huisje gelegen naast een enorme vuilnisbelt. Op een dag komt Sofia thuis met een flesje vloeistof (iets wat lijkt op water) dat ze gevonden heeft op de vuilnisbelt. Haar moeder is op dat moment druk bezig met koken op open vuur. En dan gaat het mis.... Sofia gooit het flesje in het vuur en er volgt een enorme ontploffing. Haar moeder houdt er lichte verwondingen aan haar lichaam aan over, maar helaas is Sofia is er slechter aan toe. De ontploffing bereikt haar gezicht en veroorzaakt een flinke brandwond. De onderste helft van haar gezicht is verbrand en haar onderlip daarmee flink beschadigd.
In flinke paniek nemen haar ouders haar mee naar het dichtbij zijnde Nationale Ziekenhuis. Ze wordt hier 2 weken onder observatie genomen, maar er is onvoldoende kennis beschikbaar om haar verwondingen te verzorgen. Haar ouders geven niet op en kloppen aan bij een tweede ziekenhuis, maar helaas ook zonder resultaat. Wegens het COVID-19 virus zijn ze niet in staat om reguliere zorg aan te bieden. Met het laatste beetje hoop, informeren ze bij een privéziekenhuis. Echter, al zou het mogelijk zijn om de behandeling uit te voeren, de ouders zullen deze kosten niet kunnen betalen. De zoektocht levert niks op… Maar dan komen ze in contact komen met een Sociaal werkster genaamd Ingrid. Zij besluit de ouders te hulp te schieten en neemt contact op met onze stichting, waar ze al langere tijd mee samenwerkt en altijd alle schisispatiënten in de regio naar doorstuurt.
Door de beschadiging aan haar onderlip heeft Sofia erg veel moeite met eten. In de 5 maanden die volgden, valt ze maar liefst 4 kilo af, waardoor ze lijdt aan ondergewicht. Vanaf het moment dat wij als stichting haar verhaal horen, voelen we ons geroepen om te helpen. Aangezien we samenwerken met verschillende plastische chirurgen, besluiten we haar in te plannen voor een van onze operatieweken. Echter gooit COVID-19 roet in het eten en zijn onze chirurgen niet in staat om deze kant op te komen. Omdat haar litteken maar niet juist behandeld wordt, begint de huid steeds meer te trekken en valt de mond steeds meer open. We voelen ons dan ook genoodzaakt om te helpen en besluiten dat het niet de tijd is om op te geven!
En dan nu het goede nieuws! Het is ons gelukt om een kliniek in de hoofdstad te vinden die voor een flinke korting haar wil helpen. Sofia zal in totaal 4 operaties moeten ondergaan, in één maand tijd. In de eerste operatie zal er een huidtransplantatie plaatsvinden om haar lip te herstellen en in de drie die volgen, zullen haar wonden worden verschoond en verzorgd. Het is in dit geval wegens infectiegevaar niet verstandig om tussendoor terug te reizen naar het afgelegen dorpje waar ze wonen. De ouders hebben dan ook besloten af te reizen naar de hoofdstad (7 uur rijden), waar ze gelukkig een maand bij familie kunnen verblijven. Sociaal werkster Ingrid springt ook bij en haalt donaties op in haar omgeving om de familie te voorzien van benzine voor de reis en eten tijdens hun verblijf bij familie. En wij als Tess Unlimited hebben besloten om de medische kosten, waaronder de operaties en medicijnen, voor onze rekening te nemen. Als dat geen teamwork is, dan weten wij het ook niet meer!
De medische kosten bedragen 35.000 quetzal (= €4.000/$4.500) en wij hopen zo snel mogelijk (een deel van) dit bedrag op te halen met jullie hulp, zodat Sofia over één week kan beginnen aan haar traject van levensveranderende operaties!
