Dit is Erica, 49 jaar, mijn geweldige vrouw en fantastische moeder van onze dochters Lisa (21) en Pascalle (19).
Al ruim 30 jaar heeft zij ME/CVS. Eerst in lichte mate, ze kon toen nog gedeeltelijk werken en had in ons dorp in Twello 7 jaar lang een boekhandel in tweedehands boeken (Boekhandel Een Tweede Leven). Dit was haar grote passie, maar sinds zo'n 8 jaar werd haar gezondheid steeds slechter. Zes jaar geleden was een rolstoel nodig om toch nog enigszins buiten de deur te komen. Een jaar geleden namen de klachten zodanig toe dat ze helemaal bedlegerig is geworden. Ze kan dus echt alleen nog maar op bed liggen en kan nu eigenlijk de deur niet meer uit.
Naast ME/CVS heeft ze ook fibromyalgie, waardoor ze continue pijn heeft in haar spieren en gewrichten. In 2013 kwam de ziekte van Graves om de hoek kijken (in 2018 moest als gevolg daarvan haar schildklier operatief verwijderd worden) In 2020 werd de diagnose Orthostatische Intolerantie gesteld. (de bloedstroom naar haar hersenen is -36% als ze gaat zitten of staan. Bij een gezond persoon is dit ca. -4%).
Vier jaar geleden begon ook de nekpijn. Eerst nog lichtjes, dus de gang naar de fysio werd ingezet. Deze kon na een paar behandelingen helaas niks meer voor haar doen. De nekpijn werd steeds erger en ook de neuroloog kon op een MRI-scan geen afwijkingen vinden. De pijn werd zo erg dat ze nu niet meer rechtop kan zitten. Het voelt alsof haar nek haar hoofd niet kan dragen. Als ze even rechtop zit, krijgt ze naast erge nekpijn ook hoofdpijn. Ze wordt duizelig, misselijk, heeft last van hersenmist en concentratie- en geheugenproblemen. Ze brengt haar dagen liggend op bed door, op haar zij, want ook op de rug liggen is te pijnlijk voor de drukpunten op het achterhoofd. Ze woont nu gescheiden van ons gezin (we hebben onze garage laten verbouwen tot extra ruimte voor haar) omdat ze teveel prikkels en geluiden niet meer kan verdragen. Het ergste voor haar is dat ze voelt geen moeder meer voor haar dochters te kunnen zijn en geen echtgenote voor mij.
In Barcelona is een arts die bekend is met deze nekklachten. In mei van dit jaar, na een upright MRI (die in Nederland niet te maken is, omdat ze dat apparaat niet hebben), bleek dat ze CCI/AAI heeft. Cranio Cervicale Instabiliteit. Atlanto-Axiale Instabiliteit wordt gekenmerkt door extreme bewegingsmogelijkheid op het knooppunt van de atlas wervel (C1) en de axis wervel (C2). Ook bleek uit de scans dat haar nekader wordt afgekneld. Een operatie is de enige manier voor haar om nog een beetje kwaliteit van leven terug te krijgen. Tijdens deze operatie wordt haar nek vastgezet. Door deze ingreep zal ze haar hoofd ca. 50% minder kunnen bewegen. Wel kan ze hierdoor weer rechtop zitten, iets wat ze nu helemaal niet meer kan. Een operatie zou mogelijk maken dat we bijvoorbeeld weer samen met zijn allen zouden kunnen avondeten, of dat ze een keer vanuit haar eigen kamer wel buiten in onze eigen tuin even in de zon kan zitten met een kopje koffie en een boek.
Deze ingrijpende en zware operatie zal tussen de 5 en 10 uur duren. Daarna zal ze 2 dagen op de IC in de gaten worden gehouden en dan nog 8 dagen in het ziekenhuis moeten verblijven. Daarna zal ze ca 4 weken in Barcelona door mij moet worden verpleegd. De echte specialist op dit gebied, iemand die al honderden operaties heeft uitgevoerd, zit in Barcelona. Omdat deze operatie in Nederland niet wordt gedaan, wordt er ook niets van dit alles vergoed door de verzekering. Omdat de kosten zo hoog zijn en er niets wordt vergoed doen wij een beroep op jou, op alle mensen die ons kennen en ons een warm hart toedragen. Of zoals Erica als motto voor deze actie heeft: “Helpen jullie mij weer overeind?” Wat mij, Gerard, betreft: ik vind het bewonderenswaardig hoe Erica de moed er nog in weet te houden, haar gevoel voor humor gelukkig nog niet is kwijtgeraakt en er nog steeds wat van probeert te maken. Maar eerlijk gezegd, de kinderen en ik hebben nog een leven, maar om Erica, hun moeder in zo een uitzichtloze positie te zien gaat je niet in de koude kleren zitten. Dus vooral voor haar, maar zeker ook voor mij, onze dochters en ook de vele vrienden en bekenden die haar ook nooit meer zien, vraag ik heel graag jullie hulp. Iedere bijdrage, hoe klein ook is welkom.

Help Erica to get upright again! Operation Neck Instability in Barcelona
This is Erica, 49, my amazing wife and wonderful Moeder to our two daughters, Lisa (21) and Pascalle (19)
She has suffered with ME/CVS for over 30 years. At first the symptoms were mild; she could still work part-time and for 7 years she worked in her own secondhand bookshop ‘Een Tweede Leven’ (A Second Life) in our village Twello. Books were and are her passion, but her health deteriorated and 6 years ago she needed a wheelchair to be able to go outside when she was feeling well enough to do so. A year ago, her symptoms become so severe that she is now fully bedridden and unable to leave the house.
As well as ME/CVS she has also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, which means that her muscles and joints are painful all the time. In 2013 Graves’ disease was diagnosed, which resulted in the surgical removal of her thyroid. In 2020 she was diagnosed with Orthostatic Intolerance, which means that the flow of blood to her brain when she sits or stands up is -36% (in a healthy person this is -4%).
Four years ago, as if she was not suffering enough, neckache started to make itself know. At first it was bearable and physiotherapy was advised to help relieve it. Unfortunately, after a few sessions the physiotherapist told her there was nothing more they could do for her. The pain got increasingly worse and the neurologist ordered an MRI-scan. Unfortunately, he could not detect any abnormalities that would explain her symptoms. The pain is now so bad that she cannot sit upright anymore. She describes the feeling as if her neck is not able to carry her head anymore.
When she tries to sit upright, even for a little while, the pain in her neck is unbearable and it results in headache, dizziness, nausea. She also suffers with brain fog and inability to concentrate or remember things clearly. She spends her days in bed, only able to lie on her side because lying on her back puts to much pressure onto the back of her head. She now lives separate from us. We had our garage converted to living accommodation for Erica when everyday sounds and activities became too much for her. The worst thing for her is that she feels she cannot be the mother and wife she wishes to be.
There is a neurologist in Barcelona who specialises in helping people with the symptoms Erica experiences. In May 2021, after an MRI scan in upright position (something that can’t be done in the Netherlands because of the lack of the specialist MRI scanner required), it appeared that she has CCI/AAI (Cranio Cervical Instability / Atlanto-Axial Instablity). It means that there is extreme lack of movement in the neck vertebrae, at the point where the atlas (C1) and the Axis (C2) meet. The scans also showed that her jugular vein is being compressed.
An operation is the only way for Erica to get some quality of life back. In this operation her neck vertebrae will be fused. This means that after this operation she can only move her head 50% of the normal range of movement. However, it means that she will be able to sit upright again, something she is totally incapable of at the moment. Having this operation would mean that she would be able to sit at the table with us when we have our evening meal or that she can get up herself and sit in the garden for a little while with a cup of coffee and a book.
This is a demanding operation which will take between 5 and 10 hours to complete. Afterwards, she will have to stay in intensive care for 2 days for observation, followed by another 8 days on a hospital ward. After that, she will have to stay in Barcelona and be looked after by myself for 4 weeks, until she is fit to fly home. The surgeon in Barcelona has performed hundreds of these operations. This operation is not available in the Netherlands at the moment and as such will not be covered by Health Insurance. This operation is costly and because there is no funding available, we appeal to you, to everyone who knows us and cares about us. Or, as Erica’s motto for this action asks: Will you please help me to get upright again?
As far as I, Gerard, am concerned, I have nothing but admiration for how Erica keeps her spirits up, as well as her sense of humour and how she continues to live the best life she can in these challenging circumstances. It has to be said, the children and I still have a life, but to see Erica, their mother in such a hopeless position is deeply affecting us. And so, for Erica, but also for myself and our daughters and the many friends and acquaintances who are not able to see her anymore, I ask for your help.
