Praktisch 2000 jaar na Jezus Christus werd ik in Bethlehem geboren als Palestijns Christen. Elk jaar reisde ik samen met mijn gezin af naar de West Bank om directe familie op te zoeken. Het gebied is sinds de intocht van Jozef en Maria heel wat veranderd. Zo kan een Palestijn als ik, uit de West Bank, niet zomaar naar Nazareth trekken. Daar is een vergunning voor nodig. Dit geldt evenzo voor Jeruzalem dat om de hoek ligt. Bethlehem zelf is omringd door een 9 meter hoge muur en hekken met prikkeldraad, enkel bereikbaar via één van de vele checkpoints. In Gaza ben ik nooit geweest. De regio is zo lang ik mij kan herinneren afgesloten van de rest van de wereld.
Desondanks voel ik mij als Palestijn en mens verbonden met het lot van de meer dan 2 miljoen Gazanen die op elke manier mogelijk vechten voor hun leven. Al ruim 32.000 van hen zijn door Israëlische bombardementen en agressies om het leven gekomen. 13.000 van hen was kind. Het is tijd onze ogen te openen voor het onrecht dat Palestina wordt aangedaan door de staat Israël.
Een pelgrimstocht
Afgelopen Palmzondag werd een pelgrimage van 30 km georganiseerd door Kairos-Sabeel van Amsterdam naar Utrecht. De afstand representeert de lengte van de kust van Gaza. De kilometers die vele Palestijnse families in erbarmelijke omstandigheden te voet hebben moeten afleggen in hun zoektocht naar veiligheid en voedsel. Tijdens de pelgrimage heb ik besloten de tocht op mezelf en op mijn eigen manier voort te zetten.
Op 30 april vertrek ik naar Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Vanaf deze Franse grensstad treed ik in de voetsporen van duizenden pelgrims voor mij in hun tocht naar Santiago de Compostela. Via de Franse route loop ik ruim een maand richting de stad waar de resten van de heilige Jakobus de Meerdere geborgen liggen. Tijdens de wandeling van 780 kilometer zal ik met trots mijn Kufiya omslaan en het gesprek aangaan met mijn medepelgrims over Palestina.
Stichting Kifaia
Al het opgehaalde geld van deze actie komt terecht bij stichting Kifaia. Deze Nederlandse stichting steunt de Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS), een Palestijnse organisatie die medische hulp biedt aan zieken, gewonden en gehandicapten in de Gazastrook. Kifaia biedt financiële hulp en werkt aan een duurzame en rechtvaardige vrede. Het is ook mogelijk rechtstreeks te doneren via de IBAN: NL91 INGB 0008 2075 89, ten name van Stichting Kifaia, Amsterdam.

Met jouw hulp hoop ik het streefbedrag op te halen voor Stichting Kifaia om medische steun te bieden aan oorlogsgewonden in Gaza. Minstens zo belangrijk als een financiële bijdrage is die van tijd gespendeerd in het verdiepen in Palestina. Om dit makkelijker te maken zal houd ik een blog bij met informatie over de huidige situatie in Gaza in de vorm van interviews, essays en verwijzingen naar bronnen waar je meer kan leren over de geschiedenis, politiek en cultuur van Palestina. Practically 2000 years after Jesus Christ, I was born a Palestinian Christian in Bethlehem. Every year I traveled with my family to the West Bank to visit immediate relatives. The area has changed a lot since the entry of Joseph and Mary. For example, a Palestinian like me, from the West Bank, cannot just move to Nazareth. A permit is required for that. This is equally true of Jerusalem which is just around the corner. Bethlehem itself is surrounded by a 9-meter high wall and barbed wire fences, accessible only through one of the many checkpoints. In Gaza, I have never been. The region has been cut off from the rest of the world for as long as I can remember.
Nevertheless, as a Palestinian and a human being, I feel connected to the fate of the more than 2 million Gazans who are fighting for their lives by any means possible. Over 32,000 of them have already lost their lives due to Israeli bombings and aggressions. 13,000 of them were children. It is time to open our eyes to the injustice done to Palestine by the State of Israel.
A pilgrimage
Last Palm Sunday, a 30-km pilgrimage was organized by Kairos-Sabeel from Amsterdam to Utrecht. The distance represents the length of the coast of Gaza. The kilometers that many Palestinian families have had to travel on foot in miserable conditions in their search for safety and food. During the pilgrimage, I decided to continue the journey in my own way.
On April 30, I will leave for Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. From this French border town, I will follow in the footsteps of thousands of pilgrims before me in their journey to Santiago de Compostela. Via the French route, I will walk for over a month toward the city where the remains of Saint James the Greater are buried. During the 780-kilometer walk, I will proudly wrap my Kufiya and engage in conversation with my fellow pilgrims about Palestine.
Kifaia Foundation
All money raised from this action will go to Kifaia Foundation. This Dutch foundation supports the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS), a Palestinian organization that provides medical assistance to the sick, injured and disabled in the Gaza Strip. Kifaia provides financial aid and works towards a lasting and just peace. It is also possible to donate directly via IBAN: NL91 INGB 0008 2075 89, in the name of Stichting Kifaiaia, Amsterdam.
