Do you remember the first time you read your favourite book? Can you recall the feeling of excitement it gave you? Could you say it felt like dreaming with open eyes? Now imagine that feeling being taken away from you. In Nigeria, many communities do not have access to books. By setting up a library we want to give people a safe space, a place where educational resources are free, a place where they can dream with their eyes open. Help us bring a change in the lives of Nigerian communities!
According to UNICEF (2021), one in every five of the world’s out-of-school children is in Nigeria. It is not surprising that Nigeria’s literacy rate for 2018 was 62.02%. During the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of access to education and inequality in education were exacerbated, leaving more children behind. We at Unity in Diversity want to mitigate the consequences of the pandemic, help develop a healthier community and encourage a love for reading. The benefits of reading are countless and can yield lifelong rewards.
Hence, we want to establish a community library in the Yimcul community. The community is located in Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State, and has a population of approximately 250,000 people, out of which only one in two people is literate. Through the library we want to contribute to sustainable and healthier communities in Nigeria.
Unity in Diversity is a humanitarian foundation existing for the purpose of contributing to complete and sustainable communities, through developmental and integration projects. We work with all members of the community including locals, refugees and asylum seekers to achieve this purpose.
