First part in Dutch, below in English.
Alles gebeurt in samenwerkingsverband.
Iemand is vermoord.
Dankjewel!

And so finally I start my first blog!
A lot has happened in the time I have been here, and I had little time to write everything down. Hopefully I'll be able to catch you up with some of the stories. Let me just start with the most recent event, our trip to The Reality.
On 24 May, we travelled as Frayba team to La Realidad, or The Reality, to pay homage to the murdered compañero (comrade) and teacher Galeano and attend an important Zapatista gathering.
On 2 May, a group of paramilitaries attacked the Caracol La Realidad - one of the autonomous governance centres of the Zapatistas, or EZLN. 15 were seriously injured, Galeano was murdered and the autonomous school and medical clinic destroyed. Although constant violent attacks occur in many Zapatista communities this is, however, the first time that they have invaded a Caracol. This action is therefore seen as a serious infringement on their autonomy and human rights. It pushes the EZLN in a position to respond. Hence this important meeting the weekend of May 24, 2014 in La Realidad.
We travelled to La Realidad in a caravan of cars from all over the country. A trip that normally takes 4 hours lasted 24 hours, very tiring, but worth the wait. The public manifestation of the Zapatistas, with representatives from all the villages across Chiapas was impressive. Furthermore, after years Subcomandante Marcos (SubMarcos) reappeared in public as well his last time.
As Frayba we were present as an impartial human rights organization, " peace camp", and of course to show support. The road was very long. With so many cars we had to constantly wait for each other. But as the Zapatistas say "we are going with the speed of the slowest ." With some short and long stops in areas where there exist a lot of unrest, we were often not able to leave the car.
But after 24 hours we finally arrived. We were welcomed by the Zapatista community, young and old, in the typical black ski-masks and red handkerchiefs to cover their faces (the symbol of the EZLN). A crowd of black and red covered faces, sharp glances, and combativeness. Once out of the car we were welcomed with the friendly smiles and voices behind these masks.
Here in Mexico there is no real freedom of expression - if you open your mouth slightly you are in risk of being arrested or worse. Before we left, and on many occasions during our work, we are aware that the government sends ' orejas ', or ears of the government (secret police, which take pictures and follow us. Hence, covering of the face can be a preventive (I personally thought). It is also the sign of resistance of the Zapatistas. EZLN says that they finally have faces by wearing the masks.
Upon entering the Caracol, the army was drawn up around the square. They stood in the blazing sun all day without moving a fin, in their black ski-masks holding wooden bats. They were definitely a presence! protector of the people, and a symbol of resistance. I found them to be the most friendliest and most polite soldiers ever. With all the peace and tranquillity we were escorted by some in the right direction. A crowd was formed on the square in front of the stage in the afternoon. From all corners of Chiapas, EZLN communities had come together. Women, men, children, in balaclavas or red cloths wearing their colourful clothing, organizing in rows on the square. With soldiers marching around. The square was FULL! Silence ... and crying babies here and there. Suddenly, a masked man appears on a horse, with a pipe in his mouth with his right eye covered. He waves to the crowd ... and then sticks out his middle finger (knowing that the public authorities are watching through the media). It is SubMarcos. For a moment I could not believe it. Someone told me earlier he will not be here, he has not appeared in public for years. More masked men and women on horses arrive. The crowd is chanting 'EZLN EZLN EZLN' , 'when one is hit, we are all hit' , 'Galeano Vive', 'you are not alone.' And they disappear.
The EZLN does not usually show like this, as I was told. Their military strategies are held indoors. Therefore, this event had an extra strong symbolism. In the speech that follows later from Subcommandante Moises and SubMarcos it becomes clear what is going on today.
What began in '94 as an indigenous armed insurrection as a desperate cry against oppression, has now generally become a peaceful resistance movement which focusses on constructing autonomy, standing for justice, democracy and freedom. The Zapatistas, with many other indigenous movements and communities here in Chiapas, are faced with a strong reality - a government that imposes their agenda without consultation, collaborates with paramilitaries and other criminal forces. There is an internal war going on in Chiapas, and there are many unethical strategies being implemented. One is called - divide and conquer. "Offering" government projects to the communities (e.g. payments, infrastructure, political party 'support'), which results often in inner community conflicts as one side decides to receive from the government and the other side decides to remain in resistance and continue to stand what they believe in. The Zapatistas in particular, want to remain independent. They choose rebellion, meaning, they choose life, as they say themselves - to build a different reality, one that respects diversity, the collective and mother earth. By the way those pirate eye covers have a meaning. They look through the left eye, the eye that is in direct contact with the heart.
The EZLN is furious and in pain over the murder of Galeano, and the invasion of the paramilitaries on their autonomy. As you can read in their speeches (you can find the links below) it is strongly expressed. But this energy, as they say, is used to make change and continue walking without taking revenge. The main part of this movement are the people. Everything is done in collaboration. The army is, therefore, only a small part and in service of the people.
Before the night falls we are organized in rows. The visitors/supporters on the inside, surrounded by the Zapatistas on the outside. Slogans are being sung. Then we are organized to walk one by one towards the tomb of Galeano. With some candles and flowers, we pay homage and we embrace his family. Then reality hits me a bit deeper. The weeping mother, wife and family. It is reality. Someone was murdered. And their struggle for freedom is not easy.
Later in the evening they are announcing that SubMarcos has a word to share. He begins by addressing the audience and the press. That his communication will probably not be fully understood. As if there is something lacking and is still pending. Perhaps after weeks, months, years, we will understand. Full of symbolism, he speaks about the struggle and construction, the challenging situations in which they (and many others in Chiapas, Mexico and the world) have to deal with, and some EZLN strategies. One was the construction of personality SubMarcos. A strategy which served partly as a distraction, which is now, in short, no longer necessary. "Instead of Galeano we put a different name, so that Galeano lives and death takes no life but only one name - a few letters devoid of any meaning, without their own history or life. Therefore, we have decided that Marcos today ceases to exist."
I realize now that I was present at an important historical moment of the EZLN. It was very impressive to observe all this, to experience how the Zapatistas organize themselves, what they stand for, but also seeing from close the struggle they are living to be able to build their communities. It's not easy, but they do not give up. A situation where I can only have respect for.
In the words of Galeano: "The evil system has no place in us. We are building another model where there is no ruler, but where the people think, give their opinion and decide. That is freedom. That is our dream for Mexico and for the world."
Without the help of the local human rights organization Frayba many violations would not come to light, and many cases would still be in impunity. They assist all who seek justice for human rights violations, regardless of ethnic or religious background. Support from outside is NEEDED as well international presence as in this case, and sharing the impunity situation internationally. If you would like to help, or want help me with raising funds for Frayba, to continue justice, please donate via this page. Thank you!
