🇳🇱 In juli ga ik een maand naar Ramallah in de Westelijke Jordaanoever, Palestina, om als vrijwilliger te helpen bij SkatePal. Dit is een Britse non-profitorganisatie die sinds 2013 jongeren in Palestina ondersteunt door te skateboarden.
Door het aanhoudende conflict daar hebben veel jongeren maar beperkte toegang tot culturele, educatieve en sportieve mogelijkheden. Het samen skateboarden weet mensen te verbinden; het maakt niet uit waar je vandaan komt, of je een beginner of een professional bent, een kind of een volwassene. Via een oproep van New Wave, een collectief wat skatesessies voor vrouwen en queers organiseert in Amsterdam, kwam ik bij SkatePal terecht. Het lijkt me supervet om samen met de jongeren in Ramallah te skaten en te zien hoe ze hun eigen skatescene opbouwen.
Anderhalf jaar geleden begon ik zelf met skaten en sindsdien ben ik niet meer gestopt. Ik heb veel nieuwe mensen leren kennen en het gevoel wat ik krijg nadat iets lukt , vind ik fantastisch. Helemaal als ik al een tijdje aan het oefenen ben. Elke keer ben ik bang om te vallen, maar toch blijf ik doorgaan. Al heb ik nu een kleine pauze vanwege verrekte enkelbanden door, jawel, skateboarden. Wel daardoor des te meer zin om weer te gaan beginnen en al helemaal om straks in Ramallah nieuwe mensen te ontmoeten en samen te skaten!
Naast het geven van lessen vijf dagen in de week, levert SkatePal ook de benodigde spullen, bouwen ze skateparken en proberen ze daarbovenop een zelfvoorzienende skateboardscene te ontwikkelen in het land.
Om dit allemaal te kunnen doen heeft SkatePal donaties nodig. 100% van deze donaties gaan rechtstreeks naar hun programma’s, waardoor ze jongeren in Palestina kunnen ondersteunen met skatelessen en workshops!

🇬🇧 In July I will be going to Ramallah in the West Bank, Palestine to volunteer to help with SkatePal. This is a British non-profit organization that has been supporting communities throughout Palestine since 2015, by promoting the social, health and wellbeing benefits of skateboarding to enhance the lives of local youth.
Because of the ongoing conflict there, many young people have limited access to cultural, educational, and sporting opportunities. Skateboarding has the potential to dissolve barriers between class, race, age and gender. It isn’t hierarchical - it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a professional, a child or an adult. Skateboarding is fun! I figured out about SkatePal through a call from New Wave. I immediately became enthusiastic about skating with the people there and most importantly: see how they are building their own skate scene.
I started skating a year and a half ago and haven't stopped since. I love the feeling you get when all practice comes together and something new finally works out. The fear of crashing and the commitment you need to try new things is sometimes freaking me out, but still, I keep going.
Although I am currently injured, I stretched my anklets while skateboarding, I'm really looking forward to starting up again and especially to meeting new people in Ramallah and to skate together!
Besides running skateboard classes five days a week, SkatePal also builds skateparks, provides the necessary equipment, organizes art and sustainability workshops and on top of that they are working hard on developing a self-sufficient skateboarding scene in the area.
To do this all, SkatePal relied on donations. 100% of these donations go directly to their programmes, supporting youth in Palestine with skate lessons and workshops.
