Planting breadfruit to end world hunger

On a demonstration farm in Uganda we are propagating breadfruit trees. Breadfruit is one of the highest-yielding food plants, with a single tree producing up to 200 or more grapefruit-sized fruits per season, requiring limited care. As soon as the tree seedlings are ready for planting we distribute them among the beneficiaries of the bicycle projects of Cycling out of Poverty Foundation. Planting them at schools, health centres and gardens. This way we aim to contribute to end world hunger, stop climate change and reduce poverty.

One tree costs 5 euro and contributes to annual increased fruit yield of 200 kg and a 24kg CO2 compensation. An average person eats 2.5 kgs (approx.) of cooked food. So one tree can contribute to a healthy and nutricient diet for one person for 80 days. And compensates 240km CO2 driven in a car.

From 2020 we aim to plant ten trees per bicycle we give out in Uganda. And from these ten trees at least one of them is a breadfruit. With an average of 250 bicycles we give out in Uganda per year, we will plant 2,500 trees per year of which at least 250 are breadfruit trees.
